CLAUDIA ROSETT: They've Been Partying Long Enough
From today's National Review Online:
On Wednesday, President Bush is due to address the United Nations, where more than 170 heads of state are meeting this week to celebrate the organization's 60th birthday and attend upon its umpteenth "reform." Among top officials at Turtle Bay, the worry is that Bush might introduce enough reality — or integrity — to spoil their fun. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has just warned, in an interview with the Independent, a British newspaper, that if the reform summit fails, he will blame the U.S. because "They are the host. You cannot be a host and destroy the party." Read More.

Rosett's article seems to imply that Bush has the capability of pursuading anyone that he can "talk straight" and that he, unlike the UN ambassadors she wants him to chastise, has honesty and integrity on his side. With all due respect to Ms. Rosett, one wonders if she has been living on another planet over the past five years. Bush has lost credibility with over 60% of Americans, according to recent polls, and when the full extent of the damage his administration has caused to this country is revealed, even his staunchest supporters will be appalled not only at this president's lack of principles, but his inability to recognize, much less acknowledge, his own shortcomings. Poverty in America is shockingly on the rise while Bush gives tax cuts to those who need them least. His war in Iraq has created a national deficit our children will be paying for in years to come while enriching those "lucky" American contractors who just keep on "winning" those government contracts (Haliburton, the devil called and he wants his soul back... oh wait, he doesn't have one...) Ms. Rosett doesn't seem to see the irony.
