CATM Praises U.S. Senate Action Against Hezbollah's Al-Manar Television
Washington, D.C. (October 21, 2005) – The Coalition Against Terrorist Media (CATM) praised the Senate for unanimously adopting an amendment aimed at naming Hezbollah's global satellite channel, al-Manar, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity.
The amendment was introduced to the Transportation-Treasury Appropriations bill by Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Gordon Smith (R-OR). It urges the Treasury Department to name al-Manar to the SDGT list. The unanimous voice vote yesterday puts the entire Senate on record in its concern about al-Manar.
What is the significance of this vote? Are we going to jam Al-Manar?

Douglas, unfortunately we can't jam al-Manar but what Americans can do is encourage the Treasury Department to designate al-Manar as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity. This will allow the U.S. government to impose financial penalties on companies, individuals and governments that support al-Manar. Today, al-Manar is carried by two satellite providers, Saudi and Egyptian, which distribute al-Manar into Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, inciting Arabic speakers to violence. We should all remember it's a short flight from Paris, London, Cairo or Riyadh to the U.S. for terrorists looking to do us harm. Thanks to our coalition, we have convinced seven satellite providers and their supporting governments to drop al-Manar. We hope the Treasury Department will do the right thing and help in ending the broadcasting of this terrorist television station.
