You’ll be pleased to know that things are also going poorly for the “Shining Path” Maoists in Peru as well. “Sendoro Luminoso.” There’s a name from the past.
You may have thought that this Communist guerilla group was long gone since they have disappeared from the media screen but they are still around.
In the 1980’d they terrorized the entire country. .
Their founder, a deranged university philosophy professor, once happily predicted that more than “one million” Peruvians would have to die before the rebels took over the country and turned it into a Communist state.
He was wrong, and he is behind bars for life, but an awful lot of Peruvians did die pointlessly.
The Shining Path’s number two commander, Juan Laguna, code-named “Piero,” was killed by the Peruvian Army last week at his own birthday party, crashed by government commandos. “Piero” had spent more than 20 years with the group.
There are probably 300 or less of the guerillas left, operating in the central jungles of Peru.
Like the FARC in nearby Columbia, they make their money from cocaine trafficking and extortion of other traffickers and coca plant growers, collecting about $10 US from each kilo exported.
They are led by an antediluvian throw-back from their earlier days, someone they call “Comrade Artemio.”
According to my friends at the Maldon Institute, which keeps track of these things, he is the only man still standing of the terrorists who scared the hell out of an entire nation 20 years ago.
